For directions see here. Lake BAFA is 20km long and 6km wide and is part of a National Park. HISTORY of lake BAFA In ancient times lake BAFA was a bay of the Aegean Sea, part of the Gulf of Latmos, with the harbours of PRIENE in the north and Dydima in the south and at the end of the bay was the Carian city of Heracleia. The Gulf was an important place for the marble trade, the Apollo Temple in Dydima f.i. was quarried from the groves that lay now in the garden of hotel NATURA. In time the Meander river filled the delta area with alluvium from the mountains and the harbours silted. Later the silence of the lake attracted monks which came and build upto 11 monasteries in the Latmos mountains, which make with their frescos a beautiful example of Byzantine culture.
Even older remains of human life can be found; there are pictures found in the mountains that are believed to be made over 4000 years ago.
SURROUNDINGS Hotel NATURA is in the middle of ancient culture-land surrounded by dozens of historical, archeological and culturally important sites. Normally the first rain falls after mid November and January is the wettest month. It can rain a little in April and October but the period from May until September is normally dry.
